Bellingham Beer Week 2013

headerIt’s Bellingham Beer Week. Fun events are planned each day. Check their website for details, although when I was up in Bellingham there were some changes to the posted program. It was a blustery, wet and chilly day, but the beer was good.

It was a great time to visit Bellingham’s three award-winning breweries and taste a lot of great brews. The Skagit River Brewery is so handy for a good supper on the way back home.

Boundary Bay Brewing

Ed Bennet started this Bellingham icon in 1995 and has piles of medals to show for his success. Loved by locals, the brewery also has built a reputation for being environmentally sensitive and extremely active in supporting community events.

The beers are fantastic. I was able to enjoy several, including the Scotch Ale (my personal favorite), the Dry Stout, Oatmeal Stout, Harvest Rye Ale, and ESB.

chuck01Chuckanut Brewing

Will and Mari Kemper have won more awards recently than a dozen top breweries put together. They are especially noted for their Kolsh and Vienna Lager. I was fortunate to be able to have some of the Kolsh, a Festbier, a Rauch Lager, and a collaboration brewed Belgian Ale, pretty high in ABV.

Kulshan Brewing

Nestled away in a neighborhood north of downtown and closer to the I-5 freeway is Kulshan Brewing, the new kid on the block in Bellingham. The offer many good beers, including the TransPorter, Dude Man Wheat, Bastard Kat IPA, a Dry Stout and an Imperial Russian Stout.

Skagit River Brewery

The Skagit River Brewery, just off I-5  in Mount Vernon, has been making craft beer since 1994, thanks to founder Charlie Sullivan.  Now managed by Eric Lint and Head Brewer Mike Armstrong, their current lineup includes a good variety of brews including a brown, porter, and ipa. The food there is wonderful.
